UW-Manitowoc’s Helgeland Attends Conferences
March 19, 2002
Catherine
Helgeland, Professor of Geography and Geology at the University of
Wisconsin-Manitowoc, recently presented at a University of Wisconsin-Green Bay
conference titled “Enhancing the Craft of Teaching:
Moving Beyond Content.” Helgeland
was invited to present at this faculty development conference attended by
approximately 100 UW System faculty and staff.
Helgeland’s presentation, “New Techniques for Enhancing Learning in
Lab Courses,” focused on how professors can enhance skill development and
content learning in lab courses while decreasing their grading workload.
She has presented this topic at a national conference and has published
several articles based on her ideas.
Professor
Helgeland also recently attended an Association of American Colleges and
Universities conference held in Washington, D.C. titled, “Changing Students,
Changing World.” The focus of the
conference was how to integrate the teaching of values into post-secondary
education. The conference explored
a wide range of related issues including how to decide what values are
appropriate to teach and how to do so. One
keynote speaker discussed how it is better for our country to pursue allies by
convincing them that our values are what they need, rather than using military
and economic power. Another speaker
addressed research indicating that today’s students are pursuing happiness
through material wealth rather than fulfillment of their values.
Helgeland
attended the conference as an Executive Committee member of the Office of
Professional and Instructional Development (OPID).
She was exploring possible future programming for the professional
development of UW System faculty and staff.
OPID is the statewide faculty development resource for UW System
Institutions that aims to support and meet professional development needs
through programming, conferences and grants.
Helgeland
has been a Professor of Geography and Geology at UW-Manitowoc since 1980 and is
a recipient of the UW Regents Teaching Excellence Award.
She received her bachelor’s and master’s degrees from UW-Madison.
