HELGELAND
ATTENDS ANNUAL AAG MEETING
Catherine
Helgeland, Professor of Geography and Geology at the University of
Wisconsin-Manitowoc, recently attended the Association of American Geographers
Annual Meeting held in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
Helgeland co-facilitated a workshop about how to be an effective
department chair. She specifically
addressed chairing small or merged departments.
Helgeland was chair of the Department of Geography and Geology for the
University of Wisconsin Colleges from 1995-1999. As
part of the conference, Helgeland also participated in a field trip entitled
“Industrial Restructuring at the Turn of the Twentieth and Twenty-first
Centuries: The Monongahela
Valley.” The Monongahela Valley
was a major industrial site in Pennsylvania for steel plants during the 1800’s
and 1900’s. The trip examined
what happened to the area as the steel industry declined and as the area was
unevenly redeveloped during the late 20th century. Helgeland
also participated in the various sessions and exhibits at the meeting. The
Association of American Geographers is a scholarly, non-profit organization
founded in 1904 to advance professional studies in geography.
Helgeland
has been a Professor of Geography and Geology at UW-Manitowoc since 1980.
She received her bachelor’s and master’s degrees from UW-Madison. |
