John Berger's "The White Bird"
A short essay by John Berger, artist writer and critic from his collection Sense of Sight.  In this piece
Berger suggests a baseline definition for art and the aesthetic experience.  As you read it consider the
following:
How is the white bird a work of art for Berger?
What criteria of the five he enumerates does it fulfill and how?
What is the difference between primary and cultural symbolism?  Can something be both at the same
time?  How is Berger defining symbol?
What is the mystery Berger refers to? Will solving the mystery help to explain the nature or function(s)
of a representation?
If you do not know the meaning of atavistic, congruence, phenomenological or ontological..... you know
what to do.
What does Berger mean by affirmation?
How does art proclaim man(human), and what reply is hoped for?
Consider a piece of art that is somehow a part of your life.  How does it fit the criteria for being art as
suggested by Berger?
