UW-Manitowoc students participate

in year-end field trips

Geography and Geology students of Professor Catherine Helgeland at the University of Wisconsin-Manitowoc recently topped off their semester by taking part in field trips related to their topics of study.

Students enrolled in Weather and Climate visited the Milwaukee Domes and Milwaukee County Museum to get a better understanding of growth in rain forests and how plants adapt to climate.  While the domes provided examples of live vegetation, the museum provided the dark atmosphere and sounds characteristic of the rain forest.

Students attending this field trip included:  Jill Berger, Laura Bratz, Ann Chapman, Chris Dercks, Melynda Garza, Justin Heinzen, A. Her, Jared Hoffman, Brooke Jens, Nicholas Knier, Carrie Koenig, Greta Malmanger, Terri Maurer, Philip Meisnest, Ann Meyer, Sarah Mittnacht, Nathan Musial, Karen Nenahlo, Nichole Overlee, Michael Pazdera, Dennis Rosloniec, William Sharkey, Britanny Siehr, Amber Simpson, Robert Soik, Cory Stephani, Elizabeth Tienor, Rebecca Timm, Nathan Todl, Kurt Van Patten, Lindsay Wallander, Thomas Watkins, Alicia Whitney, Brian Wilke, Jennifer Yanda, Kimberly Zimmer.

Students enrolled in Earth Science and Human Environment toured sites in Door County, led by a member of the Door County Soil and Water Conservation Department.  Students observed environmental problems caused by human’s use of the ecosystem mainly due to a rising population, associated land uses, and the unique nature of soil and rock in Door County.

Students attending this field trip included:  Brent Behnke,  Nicholas Close, Derek Deprey, Misty Evans, Heidi Fischer, Lance Fischer, Adam Glaeser, Eric Haataja, Amy Hamann, Emmanuel Hooper, Sarah Hynek, Lynn Jensen, Sam Johnsrud, David Koenig, Derek Kraemer, Michelle Kirchen, Jennifer Lange, Tyler Mankovecky, Adam Popp, Eric Pushart, Sara Rathsack, Bryan Rohm, Stephanie Schmitz, Melissa Springer, Jennifer Staudt, Connie Steffens, Emily Trask, Ross Ullman, and Grant Zimmerman.

Helgeland says she likes to incorporate a field trip into each of the classes she teaches so the students get a chance to better understand how the courses relate to the real world.
