UW-Manitowoc Founders Hall Gallery Hosting Geography Class Paintings

10/5/04

Landscape paintings completed as part of Professor Cathy Helgeland’s “Physical Geography” course this summer will be on display in the University of Wisconsin-Manitowoc Founders Hall Art Gallery through October 29th

Twenty local students, along with twenty UW-Stevens Point students enrolled in Professor Diane Canfield Bywaters’ “Landscape Painting and the Environment” course completed the works during a three-day trip to Devil’s Lake during the summer session.  The collaboration between the two professors was designed to give students a glimpse of how the disciplines of Art and Geography overlap in the real world.  Their course development was made possible by a Scholarship of Teaching and Learning grant, and their selection as Wisconsin Teaching Scholars during the 2003-2004 academic year.

Their collaboration also allowed students to fulfill special requirements set forth by their respective schools.  UW-Manitowoc students were able to fulfill the UW Colleges’ requirement to complete an interdisciplinary studies course before receiving an Associate’s Degree.  UW-Stevens Point students were able to fulfill their environmental literacy credit needed to graduate.  This is the third collaboration for the two professors who previously joined together to teach Helgeland’s “Earth Science and Human Environment” in the spring of 2002 and Bywaters’ “Landscape Painting” in the summer of that year.

The UW-Manitowoc students whose art will be shown include:  Scott Allen, Yang Vau Chang, Nicole DeKeuster, Nissa Enos, Scott Everson, Ying Her, Pearl Johannes, Kristin Junk, Courtney Karbon, Katie Klosinski, Nancy Orvis, Natasha Preder, Jessica Rozmarynoski, Kellie Salkowski, Brooke Schreiner, Brian Sobel, Abigail Steimle, Moses Vang, Soulee Xiong, and Yee Yang.

The UW-Manitowoc Founders Hall Gallery is located at 705 Viebahn Street and is open to the public during regular building hours, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.  There is no admission cost.  Call 683-4729 for more information or visit the UW-Manitowoc web site at www.uwmanitowoc.uwc.edu.
