UW-Manitowoc faculty participate
in conferences
Several University
of Wisconsin-Manitowoc faculty members
kept busy this past summer by participating in conferences and workshops across
the United States.
Catherine Helgeland, Professor of Geography and Geology,
gave a presentation titled “Whom do we teach in the year 2000? How do we do it better?” at
UW-Whitewater in August.
Approximately 100 faculty and staff participated in the workshop that
focused on student learning and teaching.
Helgeland reported on studies conducted by the Higher Education Research
Institute of UCLA and presented case studies based on faculty and student
issues related to teaching and learning.
Helgeland has been asked to return to UW-Whitewater to do a follow-up
workshop in January, and has also been invited to serve as a consultant to a
UW-Whitewater initiative on preparing junior faculty. In addition to the Whitewater workshop, she
also presented a workshop on “Students of the Year 2000” to the UW Colleges
Department of Geography and Geology fall meeting.
Richard Van Der Vaart, Associate Professor of Physical
Education and Athletic Director, attended the 25th Annual National
Wellness Conference held in Stevens
Point, Wisconsin, in
July. The theme for the conference was
“Pathways to Wellness, Experience the Journey.”
Presenters from a variety of disciplines with national recognition for
their work in Wellness Education shared their thoughts about health and the
various pathways to wellness. Along with
more than 4000 attendees, Van Der Vaart participated in activity sessions and
specific knowledge sessions.
Martha Schuh, Associate Professor of Mathematics, was a
presenter and participant at the National Association of System Heads (NASH)
K-16 Summer Institute held in Park
City, Utah, in
July. Schuh was a member of the
Wisconsin team that included UW System Administrators, UW staff representatives
and a representative from the Merrill
Area School
District.
Schuh co-presented the topic “Do standards and curricula match up – high
school senior year and college freshman?”
Schuh is currently on sabbatical and is examining this issue with the
Office of Academic Affairs in Madison.
Dr. Katherine Bichler, Assistant Professor of Chemistry, was
a presenter and participant in the 16th Biennial Conference on
Chemical Education held in Ann Arbor,
Michigan, in August. Bichler presented a paper on the development
of organic chemistry as a compressed video course. Compressed video is a form of distance
education where students see, hear and interact with the instructor in real
time, but do so via a television screen and microphones. In her presentation, Bichler addressed some
of the difficulties with this type of course such as feeling disconnected from
the students and slow turn-around times for grading assignments. This course is being offered for the first
time via distance education this fall and will reach students at four different
UW Colleges campuses.
Steve Folstein, Assistant Professor of Communication and
Theatre Arts attended the Association for Theatre in Higher Education
Conference held in Washington,
D.C. Folstein participated in a staged reading of
the first David Mark Cohen award-winning play, as well as a workshop of a new
play. Folstein also worked as an actor
and musical director this summer for a production of “Pump Boys and Dinettes”
at the New American Theatre in Rockford,
Illinois.
